Georgian Citizenship: Ways to Obtain

The most natural path is citizenship by descent. A child receives Georgian citizenship if at least one parent is a Georgian citizen, regardless of place of birth. This is the 'right of blood' principle. For people with Georgian roots, this is often the shortest path to a passport.

For those who have moved to Georgia and want to eventually become citizens, the main path is naturalisation. Key requirements: long-term legal residence in Georgia (years on a temporary and permanent residence permit build the necessary record), knowledge of the Georgian language, basic history and legal norms, no threat to public security, a legal source of income and a real connection to the country.

In addition to the standard procedure, citizenship can be granted in a special (exceptional) order — for outstanding service to the country or significant contribution. This path is not mass-market and is decided individually at a high level.

In Georgia, dual citizenship is possible, but by permission — as an exception rather than automatic. Retaining your previous citizenship when acquiring Georgian citizenship is considered individually and requires justification. Clarify this aspect early when planning naturalisation.
