Visa-Free Entry to Georgia: 365 Days Without a Visa

The 365-day visa-free regime covers citizens of around 98 countries: EU states, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan and many others. An important nuance: the rule applies to citizenship, not the country of departure.

If your country is not on the list, many nationalities can apply for a simplified electronic visa (e-Visa) online in advance.

From 1 January 2026, entry requires health insurance with coverage from GEL 30,000. Buy the policy before departure, ensure the coverage meets the requirement, and keep proof handy — border control may ask to see it.

The policy is not just a formality: healthcare for foreigners without insurance is paid, and an unexpected doctor visit can easily cost more than the policy itself.

The period is counted from the date of entry. Many relocants use visa runs: shortly before the end of the period they make a short trip abroad and re-enter, resetting the counter. This formally works but abuse is risky — border control may ask questions. If you plan to live in the country for years, switching to a full residence permit is wiser.

A passport with sufficient validity, health insurance from GEL 30,000, proof of purpose and duration (accommodation booking, return ticket or travel plan), and proof of funds. Border crossing usually takes minutes, especially at Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports.

Long-term visa-free stays have a tax implication: if you spend 183 or more days in Georgia within a year, you become a tax resident regardless of your entry type. If you plan to stay long-term, consider the tax side in advance.

Visa-free is fine for testing the country, but a residence permit is needed when: you want to work officially, plan a mortgage or long-term banking products, are building a path to permanent residency and citizenship, or want maximum legal certainty for your family.
